The Ishinomaki Stool was designed for a workshop held by the American furniture company Herman Miller, where temporary housing residents and elementary school children made furniture together. When designing this stool, members of Ishinomaki Laboratory researched the current state of temporary housing. In temporary housing, quite a few people use beer crates as stools. There was also a need for a step stool when putting luggage in the storage closet, and a chair when putting on shoes at the entrance. That’s why they decided to create this compact and lightweight stool.
This product is a 1/4 size miniature kit that can be assembled using the same assembly process as the real thing.
SHINOMAKI STOOL was added to the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London in 2015. The V&A specializes in art and design, and is said to be unparalleled in the world for the quality and richness of its collection. In addition to the appeal of the product itself, the piece was praised for being furniture born out of research into temporary housing at the time of the earthquake, and for being easy to assemble even for beginners from a flat state.
