About:
These slender,  squared, chopsticks are carefully carved by hand.
Urushi lacquer has been repetitively applied on them until they achieved this bright coloured yet translucent result.

Urushi:
Lacquerware from Japan is called Urushi.
A sophisticated, beautiful art craft which in Japan dates back to 7000 BCE.
Some few remaining important Urushi craftsman in Japan received the status of being a “Living National Treasure”.
An other important fact is that harvesting the sap/resin of the lacquer tree to produce lacquer ware, means that the tree must die.
This explains the high value of Urushi products.
“Kiwami” chopsticks are the masterpiece of Yamachiku’s technology, developed by a veteran female chopsticks craftsman and a lacquer craftsman.
Founded in 1963 Yamachiku is producing bamboo chopsticks made by the thick Moso bamboo.
The bamboo trees are cut by professional foresters, helping to preserve the local ecosystem of the Kumamoto bamboo grove.
